5th Grade Science and Social Studies

 

Welcome to the 5th grade science. I will be teaching your son or daughter Science and Social Studies this year. I am looking forward to working with you and hope that you and your family have a fun and safe summer. Information about what will be covered in the first marking period and throughout the school year, along with homework and quiz and test policy can be found down below.

Science

In Science this year, the students will be covering many topics from weather to space. The students will start off the year learning about cells. The students will begin to observe different cells using micro slide viewers. Each class will observe and compare and plant and animal cells and will observe bone, muscle, and blood cells. The students will then learn about the different systems that make up our body. Each class will go to the computer lab and create a PowerPoint presentation about an assigned body system and present it to the class. Each group will show the importance of each body system, the parts of each body system, and different things that could go wrong in each system. The students will begin to understand how cells make up tissues, tissues make up organs, and organs will make up body systems.

Social Studies

In Social Studies, the studnets will covering early American history. The students will start with world geography and learn about  how our country was started. During the 1st marking period, the students will be learning about early American History and important United States Geography. Students will be able to identify the different regions of the United States, including important landforms and bodies of water. The students will also discuss how the 1st people arrived in North America and discuss such theories as Continental Drift. The students will end the marking period by discussing the different Native Americans that make up each region of the Untied States.

September 11th will also be discussed. The class will discuss the events that led up to that day and discuss a timeline of events that happened on this date. Students will create a drawing about what they believe should be built at the site and write a paragraph explaining their picture.

Throughout the marking period, students will be expected to complete current events. Each student will be given a schedule and an explanation of the expectation for current events during the second week of school.

Homework

Homework will be assigned daily and is expected to be completed by the next day. No credit will be given for late homework. Homework will be averaged into your final grade and is a way to help your final grade. Homework will not be graded, just checked for completion.

Quizzes and Test

The students will be quizzed in each subject weekly. Tests will be announced one week before and the students will be given a student guide with the information that will be covered on the test. The students will also be given a second study guide the day before the test to review this information. Quizzes will be announced at the beginning of each week. The students will be complete a review worksheet that will contain all the information on the quiz. This review worksheet will be completed and corrected in class. The worksheet will be given out the day before the quiz.
