WELCOME TO THE FIFTH GRADE !!!

             This year I will be your child's Literature teacher!

                  The Most Important Part of Reading Is Understanding the Meaning!

                   The following six themes will be covered in literature during the year:

                              Nature's Fury, Give it All  You've  Got, Voices of the Revolution, Person to Person,

                               One Land Many Trails, and Animal Encounters.

                                 Various full-length novels will also be read as a class to accompany our units of study.

                        Throughout the year I strongly encourage the children to bring in any item that will enhance

                                 our areas of study.  It is truly important for the children to feel that they can contribute to their learning experience.

                                The students will study a wide variety of genres to help them discover which type of books they enjoy reading. This will enable each child to discover their personal love of reading!

                                      Homework planners will go home daily along with their binder to help your child study current story maps, vocabulary                                       lists and open-ended questions. Listed below you will find a book report schedule for the year. Please encourage your                                          child to read about twenty minutes each night to strengthen their reading comprehension skills.

           November-December            Historical or Realistic Fiction Report

             February-March                      Biography or Autobiography Report

                      April- May                            Newbery Award or Science Fiction Report

                                   Grading- Tests, quizzes, oral reading, class participation, notes, homework, book reports, and projects will all be graded using rubrics                                      and traditional grades (A, B, C, D, F).  Progress reports will be sent home periodically.   Feel free to contact me at school, by a                                             note, email, or phone call (973-347-1019  ext. 1615 ) at anytime.
