Homework Assignments

Single Sunflower WELCOME 2010 - 2011

Welcome to 6th grade Language Arts! Have a safe and happy summer. I look forward to meeting you in September!

NEWS

Please see supply list below.

ABOUT

In sixth grade Language Arts, we will focus on writing, grammar, and spelling. Sixth graders will craft five-paragraph essays as they develop their writing skills through a variety of writing assignments including narrative, descriptive, and persuasive. All writing will be showcased in a portfolio to chart the growth of each individual student. Grammar lessons and spelling units will serve to strengthen student writing and to improve command of the English language.

SUPPLIES

Sixth grade students will have several binders this year for all of the different academic classes. We will assist students in the setup process during the first days of school, but the binder for Language Arts will be arranged as follows:

Do Nows
Spelling/Grammar
Writing

You will need (3) dividers to separate these sections within the Language Arts area of your binder. Also, please purchase (2) two-pocket folders for our class. One 2-pocket folder (3-hole punched) will be kept in the binder to store all graded work. The other folder will be used as a classroom portfolio and will not be sent home. Major writing assignments along with all prewriting and drafting materials will be catalogued in the portfolio and will be used to track individual progress throughout the course of the year.

HOMEWORK

Homework is posted on the board each day and students are instructed to copy it in their planners at the beginning of each class. Details about every assignment are posted daily through the homework link on this website, so please check here often for more information.

BE PREPARED FOR CLASS

Everyday, be sure that you have the following:

•  Homework (with FULL heading on the page)

•  Pen or pencil

•  Binder and folders

Have these items out and ready as soon as you take your seat.

DO YOUR WORK NEATLY

To write assignments, you have two options:

TESTS AND QUIZZES

In Language Arts, final copies of major writing assignments count as test grades. There will also be tests and quizzes for all grammar and spelling units. These are always announced in advance. Spelling lists are usually given out on Monday and the quiz will be given on Friday each week.

Expectations when ABSENT

•  Check this website for missed homework assignments or call a friend

•  Check the “While you were out” folder when you return to class to collect handouts and make-up work

•  Place all completed make-up work in the appropriate tray

•  Copy any notes from a classmate

•  Be prepared to hand in work or to take a test if it was announced before your absence

•  Make arrangements to make up any tests/quizzes that were missed

•  Anyone absent from class due to band, chorus, SEEK, or class trip is responsible for completing any work assigned during the absence

I look forward to working with you and your child this year. Should you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me via email (martyniuk.christie@byramschools.org) or voicemail (ext. 1653).
