The Basic Skills Program is a positive and supportive program designed to give students an extra boost in academic skills and self-esteem. School districts in New Jersey are required to conduct a Basic Skills Program. The purpose is to provide additional support and instruction for students who need extra help in reading, writing, and/or math skills. Students are selected on the basis of their performance on the NJASK, other assessment measures, and the teacher's recommendation. Instruction is designed to meet the individual needs of each child. Basic Skills teachers view each child's progress on an ongoing basis. This information is shared with parents during the conferences and with quarterly reports.
