Kindergarten

Specifics

Some of the specifics we will be working on during the school year include:

Language Arts: naming each letter of the alphabet and identifying the sound that the letter makes. Children will also be required to name the letter a specific sound makes.  For example: The letter B makes a /bbbbb/ sound and the sound /bbbbb/ is made by the letter B.

The students are expected to use inventive spelling in Kindergarten. Inventive spelling is simply the process of writing down the sounds that are heard in words. This is an important step in learning how to read.

The children will distinguish between real and make believe, identify main idea, make predictions, re-tell stories, answer questions about stories and become authors and illustrators for classroom books.

The children will be introduced to "word families" with rhyming word activities. For example: The "at" family members include: bat, cat, fat, hat, mat, pat, rat, sat, etc.

An important part of the development of language is learning songs, poems, and fingerplays. These will help develop listeing skills, language skills and enjoyment of language, music and movement.

The students will participate in phonemic awareness activities on a regular basis. Phonemic awareness is simply the concept that words are made up of sounds that are put together.

Math:  The children will be learning to identify and write numerals 1 - 30; identify and copy patterns, name solid and plane shapes, add and subtract, measure with non-standard measurement tools, use specific
mathematical vocabulary, sort and classify a variety of objects, identify penny, nickel, dime and quarter; make and use graphs to gather information.
